Matt Spencer

BIO:

Matt Spencer is a pro FGFS rider from Southern California and co-owner of Ruff Bike Co. Matt has been one of the strongest pillars in the community since 2009 both in front of and behind the scenes.

In front of the camera, Matt has consistently pushed the limits of FGFS. His early smooth Trick Track style and features in the Death Pedal 2 and Revoked DVD put him in the fixed gear spotlight and landed him a spot as a pro rider for Leader Bikes and Resist Parts in 2010. With a background in motocross, Matt was able to bring his seamless transition riding abilities to the FGFS bike.

Matt’s tricks and style have only continued to progress as time goes on. His diversity shows with the ability to ride slow tech setups, air huge transfers, and abubaca just about any setup you put in front of him.

Behind the scenes is arguably where Matt has flourished the most in the scene, which is saying a lot due to the sheer volume of videos he’s released for himself. Matt was just about the only person documenting the Long Beach scene from 2010-2014, which was important due to the number of top level riders in and around the area such as Antonio Wothe, Joe Mckeag, Justin Mitchell, Corey San Agustin, Mike Dinh, and Elliott Milner. Not only would he film edits of the local pros, but would frequently film trip edits of visiting pro riders such as Oskar Khan and Tyler Johnson. Then after living in Long Beach, he and others moved to Arizona where he would continue to be the main content creator for the top riders in that area which included Steven Jensen, Mike Schmitt, Elliott Milner, Justin Mitchell, and more. The Wolf Drawn videos became some of the highest level content in the scene, garnering a guaranteed tens of thousands of views per video release. Not only was he releasing high definition edits of all the riders in the area, he was consistently releasing comedic cuts from filming outtakes which all became inside jokes with the audience, and he was releasing a more casual group edit series titled Kvlt Klips, which ran from 2011-2013. Matt’s unique editing style, smooth filming, and song choices were always met with praise.

In 2013, Matt teased a full length DVD called Stay Strapped, which would later go on to be one of the most iconic FGFS DVDs of all time. The video consisted of video parts from Corey San Agustin, Jacob Ruff, himself, Jonathan Davis, Justin Mitchell, Joe Mckeag, Steven Jensen, and Elliott Milner with features from the FOAD Gang, Tyler Johnson, and more. The video premiered at 2014’s Red Bull Ride + Style competition and to this day is talked about in the scene. Matt produced the entire project himself.

Matt had multiple versions of signature pedal straps and a t-shirt + hoodie with his sponsor Phoenix. The first version of the strap and the clothes featured his signature Wolf Drawn font. The 2nd version of the strap featured multiple designs with interchangeable inserts.

In 2014 Matt and Jacob Ruff announced a collab project titled Ruff Bike Co., a bicycle company where they would go on to produce handlebars, frames, forks, and rims. As big company names like Specialized and Volume announced their exit from FGFS, companies like Ruff and Master stepped in to save the day so people could continue to get parts.

Matt has been one of the biggest inspirations in the scene since its early days. Whether it’s his riding, his fashion, or his bike builds, nobody can deny the influence he had in the scene and continues to have to this day.
